New Estimates of Southern Ocean Annual Net Community Production Revealed by BGC‐Argo Floats

چکیده

Using an expanding Southern Ocean fleet of biogeochemical Argo (BGC-Argo) floats, we developed a novel approach to estimate annual net community production (ANCP) by integrating subsurface oxygen drawdown from all available BGC-Argo profiles. Our results suggest that, on average, 14% remineralization occurs between 500 and 1,000 m 15% the euphotic depth 100 m. improved methodology, estimated total basin-integrated ANCP in be 3.89 GT C year−1 suggesting more important role for regulating oceanic carbon storage, atmospheric CO2 exchange climate than previously assumed.

Annual net community production in the subtropical Pacific Ocean from in situ oxygen measurements on profiling floats

Annual net community production (ANCP) in the subtropical Pacific Ocean was determined by using annual oxygen measurements from Argo profiling floats with an upper water column oxygen mass balance model. ANCP was determined to be from 2.0 to 2.4 mol C m 2 yr 1 in the western subtropical North Pacific, 2.4 mol C m 2 yr 1 in the eastern subtropical North Pacific, and near zero in the subtropical ...

Ocean carbon cycling in the Indian Ocean: 2. Estimates of net community production

[1] The spatiotemporal variability of ocean carbon cycling and air-sea CO2 exchange in the Indian Ocean was examined using inorganic carbon data collected as part of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) cruises in 1995. Several carbon mass balance approaches were used to estimate rates of net community production (NCP) in the Indian Ocean. Carbon transports into and out of the Indian O...

Oxygen in the Southern Ocean From Argo Floats: Determination of Processes Driving AirSea Fluxes

The Southern Ocean is of outsized significance to the global oxygen and carbon cycles with relatively poor measurement coverage due to harsh winters and seasonal ice cover. In this study, we use recent advances in the parameterization of air-sea oxygen fluxes to analyze 9 years of oxygen data from a recalibrated Argo oxygen data set and from air-calibrated oxygen floats deployed as part of the ...

Statistical Behavior of ALACE Floats at the Surface of the Southern Ocean

Autonomous Lagrangian Circulation Explorer (ALACE) floats were designed to measure subsurface velocities throughout the global ocean. In order to transmit their data to satellite, they spend 24 h at the ocean surface during each 10–25-day cycle. During this time the floats behave as undrogued drifters. In the Southern Ocean, floats tend to advect downwind and, in accordance with Ekman theory, s...

Mechanisms controlling net air-sea heatflux over the Southern Ocean

The role of large-scale atmospheric eddies and the mean meridional circulation (the Ferrell cell) in explaining the observed net heating of the ocean in the latitude band of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is examined in the NCEP-NCAR reanalyses. Emphasis is placed on processes limiting evaporative cooling rather than on on those promoting radiative heat gain. It is found that the moist...
